Top 5 Travel Tips to Help you Enjoy your Winter Travels

Top 5 Travel Tips to Help you Enjoy your Winter Travels

As the year comes to a close, it is the time for many of us to travel. Whether it is to visit friends and family, or to travel to a new destination, it is important that we are prepared for what we will face so that our trip can be fun and enjoyable.

Since we live in Thailand where the seasons are: hot, hotter, and hottest, (with some rain in between,) we would like to give you some tips on what you can do when you are traveling to experience winter this holiday season.

1. Stay Active

This one is for those who likes to exercise. The cold will make you want to stay inside with the heater on, sipping away at your hot chocolate and eating delicious food. Luckily, working out in the cold will be an exciting change from the heat that you are used to, as well as allowing your body to burn more calories needed to stay warm. Besides keeping your weight down while you try out the local cuisine, the exercise will also help keep you from getting sick, and spoiling your holiday.

2. Driving in the Snow

There are some places where renting a car to travel is almost unavoidable. While snow may be beautiful to look at, they can be deadly when you drive. Try to keep to the main roads that are plowed, break before you turn, and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. If you have to drive outside of the city, make sure that tire chains are available for your car and put them on to gain traction on ice roads.

You may also notice colored crystals on the sidewalk, which are salt used to help defrost the path. You can use them to help defrost your windshield in a pinch, but as salt is not good for cars, water mixed with rubbing alcohol will work in helping you defrost areas of your car as well.

3. Avoid Dry Skin

Another big difference in the cold is that the air will be much dryer than what we are normally used to. Make sure that you have clothing that helps covers your skin and eyes. Gloves and earmuffs will help you in avoiding aching pain from the cold, while a good moisturizer and lip balm will help your skin protected and recover throughout the day as well. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water, you won’t be sweating but your body will lose a lot of water due to the dry weather.

4. Stay Dry

While the previous advice suggests that you should stay moisturized and hydrated, you should try and stay dry. The soft, fluffy, snow will call you in to jump and play, but always remember that it’s ice. Once you jump into the snow, or get wet in the rain, you will be much more exposed to the temperature and risk illnesses. Clothing like jeans and sneakers will absorb a lot of water, while snow-specific clothing will help repel water, making the snow much more enjoyable.

5. Keep your Electronics Charged

Keep your pictures posting, locations checking-in, and tweets sending, by making sure that your electronics are charged and that you have a good backup power supply. Your battery life will reduce greatly when your battery is in very cold (or very hot) temperatures. Not just for social media, keeping your phone charged meaning that you will always have a map or an information source in case you are lost or in need of assistance.

But, all in all, no matter how much we prepare, anything can happen. It would be reassuring to have a backup plan to help you face the unexpected, whether it’s illnesses, lost and damaged luggage, or accidents.
